Bored, I began to surf through Netflix when I finally came across the show; 13 Reasons Why. It might seem like a normal high school show with the same drama, but it is not. This show covers real life issues which every teenager and almost every high school student faces while growing up. This series is based on a novel having the same name, 13 reasons why, that was published in 2007 by Jay Asher.
This show is about a teenage girl Hannah Baker, a high school student, who commits suicide. Her life-taking act leaves the whole school in a shock. After she dies, she leaves 13 tapes behind that is passed on around the school (these tapes have two rules; I won’t tell you those as you need to watch the show for it). Each tape explains and blames the person who was responsible for her to commit suicide. The show revolves around these tapes that finally reaches Clay, Hannah’s closest friend who is desperately looking for closure. Will he get the much needed closure or is he the reason that compelled Hannah to commit suicide? The story involves tapes that slowly lead to Hannah’s death. The tapes will let you choose Hannah’s death as a suicide or a collective murder.
The show is definitely worth a watch because it gets you very emotionally attached to the main characters. This show might be a little slow to start with, but it definitely picks up pace and you just want to watch the next episode straightaway. The best thing about this show is that it gives you a very detailed explanation of bullying at high school. The show provides a coherent image of untouched and less discussed issues of rape, revenge, underage drinking and survivor’s guilt. People might argue it would give some negative images or create an adverse mind set about people, but students do face these issues in their real lives. In contrast, the show positively tells us to treat people with kindness as it would appear as a favor for those going through a difficult phase in life.
This show is a must watch especially for teens who go through dark thoughts and face various life struggles. Also, the show will be an eye opener for teens who bully other kids. 13 Reasons Why will show them what the other person feels enabling them to change their ways on how they treat people.
Definitely thumbs up to 13 Reasons Why and the actors; all of them carried out their role to perfection. With all the television shows about fantasy and comic heroes, this show is something real and that is why it’s different.
