Pregnancy is an emotional topsy turvy phase, with its highs and lows similar to a roller coaster ride. Been there done that! I see you recall the times you puked and you were unable to keep anything down. Gross, I feel nauseatic. Fast forward, you have the little bundle of joy in the cot next to you, wriggling, crying and not ready to sleep. Well, lets not make it that miserable. So this little being is your new favorite and you are finally a mom. Congrats! Things are going fine until you notice you no longer fit in your old jeans. Your double chin is a surprise and the stretched tummy is an obstruction to the sight down there. Sigh…
Don’t worry, here is what you need to do to shed that fat. Personal experience to your rescue!
Do not check the weighing scale for at least two months after child birth
The magic potion recipe
Trust me, your postpartum depression is too much to handle. You cannot let yourself explode at the thought of never getting back to normal. From the day I delivered the baby, I consumed two bottles of ‘magic potion’. Yes, I used (my mom made it for me) things like fennel, carom seeds, black pepper, cardamon (along with wavring and wakumba, you will understand if you are an Indian or a Pakistani).
You can skip whatever you don’t find!
Boil these ingredients (1 teaspoon each) in water for about 15 minutes and consume throughout the day. I did those for two months; the time I stepped on to my weighing scale. I was 10kgs down than what I was before I delivered the baby (I gained good 20 kgs).
Breastfeed if you can
So let us not dwell into the benefits of breastfeeding and let me not make you sad if you are unable to do so. Simply put, breast milk despite all its benefits (golden syrup you know), helps you lose weight. But remember, to consume at least 3 litres of water and take your supplements. You need energy! And if breastfeeding makes you very hungry, read below…
See what you eat
Here is a reality check! Breastfeeding will make you hungry for the intitial time. Eat if you want to but eat healthy. Craving for chocolates and icecreams, replace it with fruit. Eager for a soda, go for a fresh juice. Bake instead of deep frying and add in salads to your diet (I have posted one healthy salad on my Instagram lately, try it out). Portion control might be a good idea, but here is how I lost weight and got rid of constipation that is even worse than postpartum depression.
High Fiber diet to lose weight and get rid of constipation
If you are following me on Instagram then you must be aware of our ongoing health series. Our current focus is on a high fiber diet. Constipation is a bad truth especially during and after pregnancy. It is worse after child birth. Imagine you will have to push for ages. That is certainly very painful. To make things easy, go for a high fiber diet. Additionally, this will help you lose the weight gained during pregnancy. Fiber tends to keep you full for long. And that is the reason it will keep you away from junking excessive meals.
Fruits our best especially when you want to lose weight. Remember, too much of fiber is also bad. This means, if I tell you to consume beetroot, don’t make the mistake of consuming 3 cups of boiled beet. I did that once and I suffered from chronic abdominal pain. For a healthy digestive system, you require 20-25 grams of fiber in a day along with 8 glasses of water. Also, you need to use husk. Soak 2 tablespoons of husk in a glass of water overnight and consume it first thing in the morning. I did it for six months and it helped me shed several kilograms. Imagine I was only 3 kilograms above what I was before getting pregnant on my child’s first birthday. Today, after one and a half years, I am 4 kilograms less than what I was when I began my pregnancy period.
Figs and bananas are high in fiber and we have already talked about that. Other helpful fruits include Apples with skin as it contains 5 grams of fiber, one cup of strawberries contains 4 grams of fiber and 1 medium orange equals 3.4 grams fiber. To complete my fiber intake, I take 2 wholewheat breads in a day as each contains 2 grams of fiber. Also, a cup of oats equals 12 grams of fiber and you can happily have that for dinner.
Nuts are an essential source of fiber and all these food items are best to lose weight. You need to plan your days accordingly. For instance, you can have two bananas (8 grams of fiber) in the morning followed by your workout. You can however, prepare a big bowl of salad for your lunch along with any of your favorites that will complete your fiber intake.
